What Should You Know about Appetite Suppressants?

According to the CDC as of November 2015, the rates of obesity in the United States has increased by over one-third of adults meeting this criterion. (36.5% of adults are obese and 17% of children are obese) Of these, 38.3% of women are obese whereas, 34.3% of men are obese. Over the past 15 years, the number of obese Americans has steadily increased. To help battle this, physicians are prescribing appetite suppressants to their obese patients.

When taking an appetite suppressant, the goal is to make yourself feel full in between meals so that you do not snack or even overeat. When you eat less, you consume fewer calories thus allowing you lose weight.

Before we prescribe any appetite suppressants, we will work closely with you to get your medical history including any other medications both prescription and over the counter you are taking as well as get an accurate BMI. Your BMI or Body Mass Index measures the amount fat you have on your body compared to how tall you are. If you are not very tall and are heavy, then your BMI will be higher than if you are tall and do not weigh very much. (For example, someone who is 6’0 and weighs 170 pounds has a BMI of 23.1 which is within the normal weight standards. Whereas if someone is 5’3 and weighs 170 pounds they will have a BMI of 30.1 which is considered obese.) Click here to check your BMI by inputting your height and weight.

The BMI ranges include the following:

  • Underweight = < 18.5
  • Normal Weight = 18.5 – 24.9
  • Overweight = 25-29.9
  • Obesity = 30 or greater

In order to be eligible to be prescribed appetite suppressants, you will need to have a BMI of 30 or greater, however, there are some exceptions. We will also base this decision on your overall health and medical history. This includes what prescriptions and over the counter medications you may be taking. Some common side effects of appetite suppressants may include blurred vision, constipation, upset stomach, insomnia, dry mouth, and irritability.

How do Appetite Suppressants Work?

There are two ways in which appetite suppressants work. The first way would be by changing hormonal levels which increases your Seratonin levels. Seratonin is a neurotransmitter and has many functions in your body including helping with learning, mood, sleep, and appetite. When it comes to appetite, when you take Seratonin, it makes your mind think you are full thus making you not feel hungry. If you are not hungry, then you will not eat and this will reduce your caloric intake thus allowing you to lose weight. By increasing your levels of Seratonin, it will also help you when you feel stressed out and think you need to eat. With the increase of Seratonin, it will also release Dopamine and these are known to make you feel good and will change your mood from stress to happiness which will ultimately make you not feel the urge to eat.

The second way the appetite suppressants work would be by physically making you feel full. If your stomach feels full, you will be less prone to eat and the less you eat the more weight you will ultimately lose. The way it makes your stomach feel full is that it uses an ingredient Glucommanan which is taken from the root of a konjac plant. This has been used for hundreds of years as a thickening agent in many Japanese recipes. They have often referred to this as “the broom of the intestines” because it works so well. When you take this as part of your appetite suppressant it will expand while in your stomach making you feel full. When you are full, you are not going to snack or overeat which is your goal with the appetite suppressant.

Other possible ingredients which may use in your appetite suppressant include Green Tea Extracts, Ficus Seaweed, and Hoodia Gordonii which is a cactus extract. All these have properties which will expand in your stomach thus making you feel full and reducing your appetite.

Should you be Monitored While Taking Supplements?
